Rachel McAdams lands lead role alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in superhero movie

Los Angeles - Rachel McAdams has confirmed she is in talks to star in Doctor Strange.

The 36-year-old actress was reported to be the front runner to play the female lead in the Marvel movie opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, who will portray the titular superhero.

Now McAdams has confirmed negotiations are ongoing about her joining the blockbuster and she's interested in the role.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times newspaper, she said: "It's still super-early days, and I don't know where that's gonna go, if it's gonna go anywhere at all."

McAdams isn't concerned about the film's outlandish plot because she's not a "comic book snob".

Other stars rumoured to be set for roles in the movie include Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton, who is due to play The Ancient One.

The film centres around young neurosurgeon Stephen Vincent Strange - played by 38-year-old Cumberbatch - who becomes the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against mystical and magical threats who is trained by The Ancient One.

In the original comic book series The Ancient One character is male and of Himalayan descent.

Doctor Strange will be released in summer 2016.
