Los Angeles - A record 76 movies have been submitted for the foreign language Oscars including first-time entries from Saudi Arabia, Montenegro and Moldova.
The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 16. The 86th annual awards will be presented on March 2 in Los Angeles.
The Saudi entry Wadjda is a story about an 11-year-old girl's quest to get a bike, and is the first film from that country to be directed by a woman. Previously part of Yugoslavia, Montenegro submitted Ace of Spades and Moldova All God's Children.
South Africa had nominated gangland thriller Four Corners as its entry for the prestigious award. The shortlist of nominees will be announced in January ahead of the Academy Awards in March.
