Russell Crowe joins Les Miserables

Los Angeles - Russell Crowe has signed on to star in Les Miserables.

The Australian actor - known for his action roles in Gladiator and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - will play police inspector Javert in the forthcoming musical movie, being directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Tom Hooper.

Hugh Jackman is set to play the lead role of Jean Valjean in the film, and Helena Bonham Carter - who starred in The King's Speech, for which Tom won his Academy Award - is also in negotiations for a leading role.

The story tells the tale of a man who steals bread to feed his sister during the 19th century French rebellion and spends years languishing in prison and dealing with the consequences of his actions when he is released.

Anne Hathaway and Paul Bettany are among the other names who have been rumoured to take on leading roles.

Les Miserables is set to be released in December 2012.
