Los Angeles - Ryan Reynolds is set to star in Highlander.

The Canadian hunk - best known for his roles in The Green Lantern and The Proposal - will play Scotsman Connor MacLeod in a new movie version of the 80s classic.

The script has been written by Iron Man scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway alongside Twilight: Breaking Dawn writer Melissa Rosenberg.

The original fantasy action film - directed by Russell Mulachy based on the story by Gregory Widen - starred Christopher Lambert as Connor and saw Sean Connery play the part of Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez.

It did not receive a good reception upon release in the US but had persistent popularity in Europe, and saw several sequels and a TV spin-off created.

Ryan has been lined up for the role for some time but is now believed to have signed up after waving the opportunity to star in several other movies.

No release date for the project is yet known.
