SA producer signs Hollywood deal

Cape Town – Creator and producer of the local TV series Intersexions, Uzanenkosi Mahlangu, has returned from Hollywood where he has signed a three-project deal with Argonauts Films, reports Destiny Man.

Mahlangu went to Hollywood to discuss a deal with Alan von Kalckreuth of Argonaut Films. They then signed a long-term partnership on a number of upcoming projects.

"I am passionate about the African continent, making it accessible to the world. The project means I can get more work done. South Africa's film industry is certain to benefit from a little stardust from Hollywood."

Universal appeal

The current deal includes the production of a series titled Frikwenci (Frequency).

He told the magazine that it had taken him two years to come up with the concept of the story.

"The story is centred around an ensemble cast of DJs who are battling their own demons. We are looking at having real celebrities in the show to give it universal appeal," Uzanenkosi said.

Fellow producer Von Kalckreuth was hopeful that the deal would serve a greater purpose.

"We have evolved a storytelling tradition that speaks to the common traits that all humans share," he said.

Uzankenkosi's production Intersexions won a Peabody Award in New York as the best in electronic media for 2011.

It also took home 11 SAFTA awards at the ceremony held in March 2012.
