Sacha Baron Cohen plays the villian in Alice in Wonderland sequel

Los Angeles - Sacha Baron Cohen is in talks for the Alice in Wonderland sequel.

The 42-year-old actor is in early negotiations to take on the role of a villain in Through the Looking Glass, which is the follow-up to Disney's 2010 blockbuster, according to Variety.

The sequel will see Cohen reunite with his 'Sweeney Todd' co-star Johnny Depp, who will reprise his role as the Mad Hatter, while Mia Wasikowska will return as Alice.

This time, James Bobin will direct the movie instead of Tim Burton, who directed the first Alice in Wonderland four years ago.

Meanwhile, Joe Roth, Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd are producing, and shooting for the film is expected to kick off in June.

Meanwhile, Cohen - who is married to actress Isla Fisher - had initially signed up to portray the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in a planned biopic, but dropped out late last year.

His other projects include the spy spoof Grimsby, which follows a secret agent who goes on the run with his football hooligan brother.

He is also developing The Lesbian at Paramount, which was inspired by a Hong Kong billionaire who offers a large sum of money to any many who would marry his lesbian daughter.

Through the Looking Glass is set for release on May 27, 2016.
