Wes Craven says Scream 4 is a retrospective of the last 10 years of horror films.
Craven, the director of the film – which stars original cast members from the first three films Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell as well as young, upcoming actresses Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere – believes the film will be a "fun" one which fans of the horror franchise will be able to enjoy despite it focusing on a younger crew.
He said: "The young cast brings a whole different world to it and a whole different take on horror.
"It's a lot about looking back on the last ten years of horror and comparing it and contrasting it and having fun with it."
The filmmaker also reveals he has seen, and approves of, the first cut of the film, which is due out in April 2011.
He told Collider.com: "I've seen the editors assembly and it looks wonderful."
Emma – the niece of Hollywood star Julia Roberts – has previously exclaimed she was excited to be part of the film series because she had never done a horror film before.
She said: "I'm so excited to be part of this ground-breaking franchise. It's the perfect opportunity for me to do something completely different than I've ever done before."
