Smurfs dominate SA box office again

Cape Town - The South African box office is blue for a second consecutive week as The Smurfs remained at the No 1 spot at the South Africa box office. The movie has now earned R17.3m to date after recording a record-breaking R7.2m in its first week on circuit, according to Ster Kinekor.

Over 400 000 people in South Africa have been to see The Smurfs across 3D and 2D cinemas countrywide. The release was timed to coincide with the spring school holidays around the country.

The film, which released in South African on the 30th of September, has been the number one film in the international marketplace for 8 consecutive weeks and has passed The Incredibles and The Sixth Sense on the all-time international box office chart.

What's Your Number?

"The Smurfs has resonated with so many movie-goers around the world and seems to be just what we are all in the mood for. A little fun, a little magic and a whole lot of family entertainment," said Thobashan Govindarajulu, Marketing Manager of Sony Pictures Releasing International in South Africa/Ster-Kinekor Entertainment.

The Anna Faris romantic comedy What's Your Number? was the highest new entry this week, coming in at No 2 with a R723 742 box office taking.

Dropping to third place is the adult comedy The Change-Up, which took R671 198 in its second week on circuit. Rounding out the top five places on the SA box office chart is Friends with Benefits at No 4 and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World at No 5.

The other two new releases this past weekend could only manage No 9 and 10 at the local cinemas. The racially charged drama The Help dominated the US box office upon its release in August, grossing a cumulative R170m, but could only take in R264 717 in its first week in South Africa to land at 9.

The emotionally charged Mixed Martial Arts family drama Warrior, starring Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte, rounds out the top 10.
