Los Angeles - Steven Spielberg has been brainstorming ideas to reboot the Jurassic Park franchise.
The director has been meeting with screenwriter Mark Protosevich to "kick around" some thoughts about ways they could create a fourth film and rebirth the series.
However, Universal is keen to stress the movie has not been given the official go-ahead and no one has been approached to write a script or star, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The franchise - about the rebirth of ancient dinosaurs in the modern world - made close to $2b at the box office, with the first movie Jurassic Park grossing $915 million at the box office alone.
Movies in the pipeline
Towards the end of the franchise it began to flag, with Jurassic Park III taking just $369m on its release in 2001.
Spielberg directed the first two projects but only served as an executive producer on the final instalment.
The multi-Oscar winning filmmaker has a number of movies in the pipeline, including a film adaptation of War Horse and a biopic about the 16th President of the US, Abraham Lincoln.
