Los Angeles - A sequel to the Spring Breakers is in the works.
Wild Bunch productions will launch Spring Breakers: The Second Coming, which will follow "the Spring Breakers who do battle with an extreme militants Christian sect that attempts to convert them", reports screendaily.com.
The original comedy starred Vanessa Hudgens, 25, Selena Gomez, 21, and Ashley Benson, 24, who play young wreckless teenagers and the follow-up will "allude" to their characters.
Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval said: "It's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original."
Irvine Welsh has written the screenplay and Horsemen director Jonus Akerlund will helm the project.
Spring Breakers was directed by Harmony Korine who had missed out on what he saw as opportunities for hedonistic pursuits as he'd been devoted to skateboarding in his youth.
The film received positive reviews from critics and proved to be a commercial success as it grossed $31m worldwide.
It premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2012 before being released internationally.
