London - Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed his Star Trek Into Darkness character is "ruthless".

The 36-year-old actor and director JJ Abrams have kept the identity of the mysterious villain under wraps until now, but the War Horse star let slip his evil alter ego would be very difficult to judge because of his ambiguous nature.

Benedict told Trek Movie: "He is very ruthless. He is not a clearly good or evil character. He is a villain but the actions he takes has intent and reason.

"He is a complicated character not to be judged by white-or-black, or good-or-evil. But this is the appeal of JJ's works and I felt challenged as an actor."

'I felt terror instantly'

The British star praised Lost creator JJ's 2009 reboot of the cult sci-fi series, but is wary of the franchise's popularity and said he was overcome with "terror" when he realised how many people would be watching the sequel.

Benedict explained: "I was a fan of the [first film], so I was pleased when I got the offer. But I know the second one will become far-bigger scale, so I felt terror instantly."

His co-star Chris Pine - who plays hero Captain James T Kirk - was impressed with Benedict's "formidable" performance on set and thinks fans will love the intensity he brings to the film.

Chris recently said: "Obviously I can't say much, but there's one scene in it. It's a really hard scene, not for me, but for Benedict. And watching him handle that and to make something that I think, on paper, could have really been a death trap for an actor. He's formidable as an actor and as a character in the story."

Star Trek Into Darkness is set for release in the US on 17 May 2013, and South Africa on 19 July.
