Ster Kinekor goes fully digital

Cape Town - Ster Kinekor is in the lead with digital conversion in SA.

The cinema chain announced on Wednesday that they have completed their digital conversion, with over 400 cinema screens now hosting a digital projector.

The 35mm projector, which has had a long run as the primary equipment used in screenings, has been effectively retired. With the new projectors, the picture quality and clarity have improved and Ster Kinekor has also upgraded its sound systems ranging from Dolby 5.1 to Dolby Atmos.

Cited as the company's largest investment to date, the conversion was started in June this year and they finished with the last cinema in Kimberley this week.

CEO Fiaz Mohamed applauded their quick work. "As far as we are aware, this is the fastest successful digital conversion process for any cinema chain of our size anywhere in the world.

"Furthermore, we managed to continue running our normal day-to-day operations across all our cinemas during the upgrade, with the minimum of disruption."

With the release of Thor: The Dark World, it was also the first time that Ster Kinekor distributed a movie solely in digital, with no 35mm prints.
