The Artist rules BAFTA nominations

Los Angeles - Silent film The Artist leads the nominations at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

The French black-and-white movie - starring Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo - has received 12 nods in categories including Best Film, Best Original Screenplay, Leading Actor and Leading Actress, beating Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy which is up for 11 awards.

Meryl Streep has been nominated for Leading Actress for her performance as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, the role for which she won a Golden Globe award on Sunday, with Michelle Williams (also a Golden Globe winner), Tilda Swinton, Viola Davis and Berenice also in the running.

Jim Broadbent has been nominated for Supporting Actor for his part as Dennis Thatcher in The Iron Lady alongside Christopher Plummer, Jonah Hill, Kenneth Branagh and Philip Seymour Hoffman

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Descendants, The Help, Drive and The Artist will all compete in the Best Film category.

Standout 2011 comedy Bridesmaids - about a woman who suffers with the loss of her job and social circle when he best friend gets married - gained nods for Best Original Screenplay and Supporting Actress for Melissa McCarthy.

The awards will be presented at the Royal Opera House in London on February 12 in a ceremony hosted by Stephen Fry.
