The Avengers smashes SA box office

Cape Town - Marvel’s The Avengers smashed in at No 1 at the South African box office this past long weekend with a Hulk-sized opening weekend. 

Fans took advantage of the extended long weekend and as of the end of day Tuesday 1 May, the film has grossed over R15.2m at the local box office.

South Africa was one of the first countries to see The Avengers, along with much of Europe, Australasia and South America. The film will only be released in the US and Canada on 4 May.

Iconic comic characters

Audiences flocked to be first to see the much-anticipated superhero action movie, making it the biggest three-day weekend box office taking in South Africa of all time – bringing in a gross box office R8.5m in the three-day period.

The film also set a number of additional records, including the biggest Friday (27 April) and the biggest Sunday (29 April) in local box office history.

South Africans were not the only ones celebrating the assembling of some of Marvel Comics most iconic comic characters.

The international box office totalled a massive $178.4m on the weekend and saw The Avengers open at No 1 in all 39 countries released so far, with many countries also seeing their biggest opening weekends of all time, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Central America, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, New Zealand and The Philippines.

Written and directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers brings together some of Marvel’s most loved superhero characters: Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, and Tom Hiddleston as the villain Loki.

The Avengers has also been widely praised by critics, with a current 93% approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
