Los Angeles - Sony Pictures has ordered a Bad Teacher sequel.

The movie studio is developing a follow-up to its hit comedy starring Cameron Diaz, which became a surprise in 2011, according to Deadline.

Sony subsidiary Columbia Pictures has set Jake Kasdan - who directed the original film - to helm the new flick, while Justin Malen will write the script.

Studio president production president Hanna Minghella said Sony "loves Justin's take on the material - it hits all the notes that made the first film such a breakthrough hit and also takes the characters in a new direction that is fresh and fun."

Diaz has yet to sign on for the project as it is still in development.

The 2011 film - which co-starred Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel - featured Diaz as a tawdry school teacher who plans to quit her job when she becomes engaged to a rich man, but when the relationship ends, must return to work. She then tries to seduce a fellow teacher, who she discovers is rich, resulting in slapstick moments.

Earlier this year, US TV channel CBS commissioned a sitcom based on the hit movie, which will star Ari Graynor. The show is set to air next year.

Kasdan is set to reunite with Diaz and Segel on raunchy new comedy Sex Tape, which is expected in cinemas next year.
