Cape Town - The Smurfs movie, which opened in both 2D and 3D on Friday, grossed a record breaking R7.2m at the South African box office at the weekend.
This equates to 160 000 South Africans who have flocked to the cinemas to see The Smurfs.
It marks the biggest ever opening weekend for a Sony Pictures Releasing International film.
The box office takings has surpassed the successful openings of all three of the Spider-Man movies as well as Hancock and the James Bond film Quantum of Solace.

To date the movie has made $381m in the US and over $500m globally (combined with the US figure). No other release this year has occupied the international number one box office slot more than The Smurfs.
The family comedy features the voice talents of Katy Perry, George Lopez and Anton Yelchin, as well as Neil Patrick Harris, Sofia Vergara and Jayma Mays in live-action roles.
Hank Azaria stars as the evil wizard Gargamel who chases the Smurfs out of their village, through a magical portal, and into our world, they land in the middle of New York’s Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.
