Trainspotting sequel picks up 20 years later

2013-03-25 21:01
London - The Trainspotting sequel would explore what happened to the characters, according to Danny Boyle.

The director - who helmed the cult hit 1996 movie starring Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd and Robert Carlyle - has offered an update on the film's proposed sequel, revealing that he is keen to pick up on the characters' stories after the original.

He told BANG Showbiz: "We're working on it. We'd like to eventually get everybody together to make a movie which is about what's happened to those guys in the 20 years between the first film and the second film. It would be a lovely subject.

"It would be a real reason to do it rather than just cashing in on the original."

The original film, which is based on Irvine Welsh's novel of the same name, followed the lives of a lost generation of heroin addicts in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Boyle previously revealed that the sequel - which would be released in 2016, 20 years after the original - would possibly be "loosely" based on Welsh's follow-up novel, Porno.

He said: "There's always been this long term plan for Trainspotting 2. If John can produce a decent enough script, I don't think there will be any barriers to Ewan or any of the cast coming back. I think they'll wanna know that the parts are good so they don't feel like they are letting anyone down.

"The reason for doing it again is that people cherish the original, people remember it or have caught up with it if they never saw because they were younger. So you want to make sure you don't disappoint people."
