Woody Harrelson joins Hunger Games

Los Angeles - Woody Harrelson has joined the cast of The Hunger Games.

The Zombieland actor will play the role of Haymitch Abernathy in the eagerly anticipated action drama movie, which stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson as lead characters Katniss and Peeta.

Elizabeth Banks, Liam Hemsworth and Stanley Tucci have also agreed to appear in the film, which is based on the Suzanne Collins novel of the same name.

Drunk

Woody's character Haymitch is a drunk who was victorious in the 50th instalment of the games - which takes places in a future society where participants, known as tributes, fight to not be killed.

Katinss and Peeta take part in the 74th games, a quarter of a century after Haymitch's battle.

The 49-year-old star has a number of projects coming up in the near future, and will soon be seen in Friends with Benefits and Rampart.

The Hunger Games - set to be directed by Seabiscuit filmmaker Gary Ross - will be released in March 2012.
