Los Angeles – The classic Hans Anderson fairytale, The Little Mermaid is getting a live action remake.
According to Deadline, Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides, Bling Ring, Lost in Translation) is set to direct the film and Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands) will be writing the script.
The Little Mermaid has been in the works since 2011 when Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady) drafted earlier versions of the script and wanted to keep the original ending of the story in which the mermaid sacrifices herself for love.
This a different type of project for Coppola who usually does adult themed movies.
According to Deadline the studio plans to move fast with this one. The release date and cast will be announced in due time.
