Zach Galifianakis headhunted to play The Joker in the new Batman Lego movie

Los Angeles- Zach Galifianakis is being lined up to voice the part of The Joker in the Lego Batman movie.

The 45-year-old comedian - who starred in the award-winning Birdman last year - is in the final stage of negotiations to voice the part of the villain in the much-discussed new movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Assuming he is confirmed in the role, Galifianakis will be joined by Will Arnett, who is reprising the role of the Caped Crusader, and Michael Cera, who was recently cast in the role of Robin.

The movie is being produced by Dan Lin, Phil Lord, Roy Lee and Christopher Miller, while The Lego Movie's animation supervisor Chris McKay has been brought on board to direct.

In addition to his starring role in Lego Batman, Michael Cera is currently working on Seth Rogen's star-studded animated ensemble Sausage Party, which features Paul Rudd, James Franco and Salma Hayek.

The Juno star has also acquired the film rights to Charles Portis' 1985 novel Masters of Atlantis, which follows a man who becomes embroiled in a quasi-religious cult, which he plans to write, star in and direct.
