Boyd Holbrook cast as the villain in Wolverine 3

Los Angeles - Boyd Holbrook will go head-to-head with Hugh Jackman in the third Wolverine film.

The 34-year-old American actor has been cast as the driven, demanding and lethally smart head of security for a global company who will go up against metal-clawed Logan - played by Hugh Jackman.

Director James Mangold cast Boyd in the film, and viewers will recognise him for his role as Agent Steve Murphy on Netflix's drug cartel drama Narcos.

Joining Boyd in the cast line-up is former Star Trek star Patrick Stewart, who will return as the older Professor Xavier.

Other film details have been kept under wraps by scriptwriter David James Kelly, but rumour has it, Wolverine 3 could be centred on stories from the Marvel superhero's later years.

Cameras are due to start rolling for the action movie next month and it will be Jackman's last outing as the character he has played for 16 years.

The film is expected to be released in cinemas on 3 March 2017.

Boyd's latest movie is western Jane Got A Gun which also stars Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton and Ewan McGregor.
