Brie Larson is Marvel's first choice to play Captain Marvel

Los Angeles - Brie Larson is reportedly Marvel's first choice to play Captain Marvel.

The Oscar-winning star of Room is the studio's favourite to bring Carol Danvers and her alter-ego to life in a standalone movie about the superhero, Variety reports.

If she takes the role, the 26-year-old actress will be the fourth new face to join the Marvel cinematic universe in recent months, after Chadwick Boseman and Tom Holland recently made their debuts as Black Panther and Spider-Man respectively in 'Captain America: Civil War', and Tilda Swinton will be seen in 'Doctor Strange' as the Ancient One alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role.

Inside Out screenwriter Meg LeFauve and Guardians of the Galaxy's Nicole Perlman are writing the script, however few plot details have been revealed.

Introduced in the comic books in 1977 and regarded as the biggest female hero in the Marvel universe, Carol Danvers is an air force pilot who becomes Captain Marvel after her DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident.

As a result, she is gifted with super-powers of strength and energy and has fought alongside the Avengers, X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D.

It's believed the studio is hoping to cast Captain Marvel now so that the character could be introduced in earlier in an ensemble superhero title that is in the pipeline, such as The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 before she gets to be the star of her own solo film.

A director is yet to be found to helm the movie.

Meanwhile, Larson can be seen next in Ben Wheatley's Free Fire opposite Armie Hammer.
