CITY PRESS REVIEW: The LEGO Batman Movie

2017-02-12 06:01

Johannesburg -  Action, suspense, comic-book superheroes, nefarious villains ... Who wouldn’t love the new Lego movie?

Uh. Me.

I walked into the cinema expecting to emerge so entertained I’d be craving to see it again.

After all, I loved the last Lego movie. It made me laugh and appreciate, all over again, the toy bricks and what they are capable of creating.

But The Lego Batman Movie annoyed me in a way I can’t quite put my finger on. The humour felt dry and forced, the story line was a bit hard to pick up and the movie as a concept is a lot better than what is played out on screen.

The whole character sketch of Bruce Wayne comes off more as mockery than irony and has the potential to irritate even Batman haters.

The creators of the movie have broken away the fourth wall more than was necessary and, frankly, it was a relief when the credits rolled.

Don’t take me as a straight-up fun hater or anything, because I most certainly am not. In fact, animated movies and children’s entertainment is my thing. But it felt to me as if the producers weren’t sure who the target market is for their Lego creation.

Most of the jokes felt old. I wondered exactly who was meant to get them. As much as I tried to look for a bright side, I couldn’t find one. Even the film’s production values aren’t anything to get excited about.

That said, this isn’t a particularly bad movie, it’s just a disappointment. If someone I knew asked, “Hey, do you know any worthwhile movies I could go watch?”, I wouldn’t be suggesting the new Lego movie.

Oh wait, there is a bright side. The trailer is great, way better than the movie...
