The plot for the sequel is being kept under wraps, but it is believed to be set several decades after Scott's 1982 film, which depicted a dystopian Los Angeles in which replicants are used for dangerous work in Earth's colonies in outer space.
Replicants who returned to Earth were hunted down by special police operatives known as Blade Runners, with Ford portraying weary agent Deckard, who takes on one last assignment.
Denis Villeneuve will direct the movie based on a screenplay by the original film's co-writer Hampton Fancher who has penned the script with Green Lantern co-writer Michael Green.
Scott is on board as an executive producer.
