Dave Franco says it's going to be hard to replace Harrison Ford as Han Solo

Los Angeles - Dave Franco thinks the Star Wars production team are "struggling" to cast a young Han Solo.

The 30-year-old actor has auditioned to play the iconic space smuggler character in a new spin-off movie which is slated for release in 2018 but has not heard if he is wanted by Disney and Lucasfilm to fill Harrison Ford's shoes.

Franco thinks bosses are unsure about how they want to proceed with the part made famous by Ford - who has played the character in four films with his first appearance in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope and most recently in last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

When asked whether he emulated Ford, 73, for his audition, he replied: "I'm not good with impressions. I think that's the reason it's so hard to cast this role, too. It's like, do they want to like perfectly embody who Harrison Ford is, or do they want to go down a completely different route? Do they want someone to look really similar to him? So, I don't know, I think they're struggling with that, maybe."

It is believed that Franco - the younger brother of 127 Hours star James Franco - was on a list of 12 young stars who were being screen-tested by Disney and Lucasfilm for the part, with notable names also including Whiplash star Miles Teller, The Fault In Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort and Scott Eastwood - the son of Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood.

However, the list has reportedly been whittled down to just three potential actors; Alden Ehrenreich, Jack Reynor and Taron Egerton.

Regardless of the outcome of his audition, Franco was "flattered" to even be approached for the iconic role.

He told MTV News: "Everyone's coming up and being like, 'Dude, what's going on?' And I'm like, 'I don't know. You know as much as me.' I don't want to underplay it, like, I'm very flattered to have been or to be whatever, wherever they are in the conversation, but, like, it is what it is."
