Deadpool kicked some serious butt at the SA box office!

Johannesburg -  20th Century Fox on Thursday announced the biggest opening ever for the studio with its release of Deadpool this past weekend at the South African Box Office.

The movie opened with a record breaking R9.3m, proving to be the coolest R-Rated movie globally and locally (16LVS), and becoming the 3rd biggest superhero opening in South Africa behind Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Deadpool is currently on IMAX screens and other cinemas in 2D, and has drawn more than 150 000 movie-goers this past weekend to see the film first.

Based on Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool.

Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

This highly anticipated super-hero film stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano and Brianna Hildebrand who have been touring the world promoting it.

Deadpool also released with a bang in countries like the US with $132.7m, UK $20.1m, France $8,6m Australia $10m, Taiwan $8.2m, Brazil $5.9m and Hong Kong $3.8m on debut, breaking box office records.

“Times Media Films is very pleased to see that SA consumers echoed the international records, flocking to cinemas to experience this envelope pushing film where the full scope of DEADPOOL’s edgy and original entertainment can best be enjoyed.” says General Manager, Driki Van Zyl.

“ The response has been overwhelmingly positive!” commented Twentieth Century Fox local representative, Michelle Steytler “This success has resonated globally with a US opening weekend of $132.7m – not only the biggest all-time opening weekend for Fox in the US, but also in South Africa.  We are truly thrilled that consumers chose to spend Valentine’s with our superhero!”
