Los Angeles - Ed Sheeran has confirmed his cameo role in the forthcoming Bridget Jones sequel.

The 24-year-old singer spent Monday shooting scenes with Renée Zellweger, who is returning as the titular character for a third outing.

It is not yet known if Ed is playing himself or a fictional character but he has promised fans they are "gonna love" the movie.

In an Instagram post, he revealed: "Spent the day being an actor in the new Bridget Jones movie. Loved it, you're gonna love it too... (sic)"

The Thinking Out Loud hitmaker first sparked rumours he would be featured in the flick in August when a film crew were spotted recording footage at his Croke Park concert in Dublin, Ireland, and a stunt double of Renée was seen sitting on the shoulders of a mystery man in the audience.

Ed's movie shoot comes hot on the heels of the news his TV show The Bastard Executioner has been axed.
