LISTEN: Ruby Rose on Nik Naks, hiking Table Mountain and meeting a dassie!

On 23 October 2015, Channel24 was part of a small group of media that was allowed to visit the set of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. During the visit we got to chat to Australian actress Ruby Rose about what it was like to film the movie in Cape Town, South Africa.

Cape Town – "Ah, those twisty things. You guys call them Nik Naks. We call them Twisties. They are the death of me," Ruby Rose says as she points to a bowl of snacks in the middle of the table setup in a tent atop a quarry somewhere outside Cape Town.

Just outside the tent a generator roars as it works extra hard to power the impressive setup of lights that illuminate the tent converted into a media centre on the set of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

It’s late night, but she’s energetic and full of life. Dressed in an outfit designed to kick ass and kill zombies in.

"Do you guys eat them? They’re amazing. Once in a while you get a packet that isn’t the normal flavour. Like a chutney flavour," she says before even sitting down in her seat.

She’s chill, laid-back and really easy to talk to. It’s her last night on set. In a few hours she has to jet off to Los Angeles to host the 2015 MTV EMAs with Ed Sheeran.

In-between filming scenes for the final Resident Evil film, Ruby is also working on her skits for the EMAs. Switching between her Australian accent and the American one (which you’ll hear in the film) has been the biggest challenge – apart from hardly getting any sleep.

"It’s so weird because I’ve been in an American accent for the last four weeks and then yesterday during the day I had to shoot some stuff for the EMAs. We only finished here on set like 08:00 in the morning and at 11:00 I had to get up to shoot for the EMAs. So I got like four hours of sleep. And they we’re like…your voice is sounding weird…and I’m like ‘oh, yeah! This is not my voice!’," she laughs.

"So then I had to speak in an Australian accent and they were like; ‘Oh! Your voice is even weirder!’ So I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. So I don’t know. I sound like a caricature now when I speak."

Ruby joins the Resident Evil franchise right at the end as Abigail. Her character appears to be one of the few remaining uninfected humans in the seventh year after the global T-virus pandemic, which began in 2002. She's a real badass chick who helps Alice (Milla Jovovich) kick some butt!

During filming in Cape Town Ruby got some time to explore Cape Town and surrounds and even hiked up Table Mountain.

Listen to Ruby talk about hiking Table Mountain and her introduction to dassies in the video below.
