MOVIE GUIDE: 4 new movies to kick off the holiday

2017-03-31 14:00

Cape Town – The new Smurfs movie hits the big screen just in time for the holidays.

In their third outing the lovable blue characters return to their roots, cartoon style.

Also in cinemas: Jessica Chastain stars in a World War II drama, Scarlett Johansson in a controversial role and a horror that doesn't live up to its scary title.

Here are 4 new films at the local box office:

Movie: Ghost in the Shell

Our rating:  2/5

Short review: The big guns with all the cash took Ghost in the Shell and gave it the ‘Merica treatment without flinching even once.

Movie: The Zookeeper's Wife

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: Though a different kind of World War II story, The Zookeeper’s Wife is just shy from being an exceptional film despite the many adorable animals.

Movie: The Bye Bye Man

Our rating: 2/5

Short review:  Drawing heavily from every haunted house thriller you could think of, along with everything from Nightmare on Elm Street to the Ring to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Bye Bye Bad Man is a highly derivative horror flick that fails miserably to live up to even its humblest of inspirations.

Movie: Smurfs: The Lost Village

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: The Smurfs are back on the big screen in familiar cartoon territory, while they will enchant the younger crowd the older ones will feel left out.
