MOVIE GUIDE: Fantasy, magic and horror at the local box office this weekend!

Cape Town – The second instalment of the American supernatural horror flick, The Conjuring hits cinemas this weekend.

Ed and Lorraine Warren leave retirement to travel to London to help a single mother who believes her house is haunted.

If horrors aren’t your thing, Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford star in a true life journo flick, Daniel Radcliffe is an evil magician and The World of Warcraft comes to life.

Here are 4 new movies releasing in South Africa today:

Movie: The Conjuring 2

Our rating: 4/5

Short review: The Conjuring 2 may be highly derivative and a bit too reliant on lazy jump scares but this nicely put together, engrossing and solidly creepy ghost story is still leagues ahead of most of its competitors.

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: A nerdtastic explosion of sorcery, violence and orcs, this adaptation of the world’s most popular game will appeal to the game fans, but not so much movie critics.

Movie: Truth

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: Truth becomes a tricky business in this newsroom drama, where star powered performances will not be enough to make it stand out in local cinemas.

Movie: Now You See Me 2

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: The Second Act takes an adequate stab at solidifying this magical franchise, but misses the kind of magic the first one brought to the box office.
