Cape Town – Carrie Fisher reportedly died after suffering cardiac arrest on Tuesday.
According to TMZ the 60-year-old was placed on life support after reportedly suffering a massive heart attack on an aeroplane on Friday.
A family source has now told the gossip website that the medical emergency onboard the flight to LA was not a heart attack, but rather cardiac arrest.
The source added that Carrie was placed on a ventilator upon arriving at the hospital after she failed to have a pulse for up to 10 minutes.
The Star Wars actress’ condition was reported to be stable on Sunday and she was due to be taken off life support.
But early on Tuesday the actress went into cardiac arrest for a second time and her heart stopped.
The actress' daughter, Billie Lourd, released a statement through her spokesman confirming the news of her mother's death.
"It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 08:55 this morning,” read the statement from publicist Simon Halls. “She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly."
