The latest instalment of the Spider-Man franchise, Spider-Man: Homecoming has smashed South African records for the series, notching up the biggest ever Spider-Man weekend opening for Sony Pictures Releasing International with over R8.2m in gross box-office takings.

One of the most highly-anticipated releases of the year, Spider-Man: Homecoming, saw Spider-Man join the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time ever, alongside his idol and mentor, Tony Stark/Iron Man (Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr).Introducing Tom Holland as the exuberant and charming Peter Parker, Spider-Man: Homecoming is packed with thrills, humour and incredible action sequences as Peter Parker (Tom Holland) takes on his most formidable villain yet in The Vulture (Oscar winner, Michael Keaton).

"Thanks South Africa for continuing to embrace Spider-Man as your favourite superhero," says Nadine Rosslind, Sony Pictures Marketing Manager at Ster Kinekor Entertainment.

"We’re thrilled with the extraordinary success of Spider-Man: Homecoming at the local Box Office. We’ve had incredible support, not only from audiences, but also from our partners who have been right there with us throughout the run-up to the opening weekend. It has all made for a fabulous Spider-Man weekend at the movies."
