PIC: Filming for Aladdin kicks off

Cape Town – Get ready to hop onto the magic carpet. Filming for Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin has finally begun.

On Wednesday, Will Smith who plays the Genie posted a picture of himself and fellow castmates Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine) and Marwan Kenzari (Jafar).

He captioned the picture: "We just started shooting Aladdin and I wanted to intro you guys to our new family."

Smith has big shoes to fill as he takes on the iconic role that Robin Williams played in the 1992 animation.

Earlier in the week Disney announced that casting for the film has been completed.

Billy Magnussen has been cast as a new character Prince Anders.

Other cast members include: Nasim Pedrad as Jasmine's friend, Numan Acar as Hakim, Jafar's bodyguard and Navid Negahban as the Sultan.

A release date for the film has yet to be announced.
