Suicide Squad director admits the film 'has its flaws'

Cape Town - The director of Suicide Squad, David Ayer has for the first time spoken out over the negative reviews the film received.

Prompted by a fan who praised him on Twitter for the work he did on the film, Ayer for the first time admitted that the film "has its flaws".

Twitter user @PensFanboy tweeted the director saying: "So thankful for Suicide Squad exactly the way it is. It’s a masterpiece, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise".

Ayer responded with a screenshot of a typed out letter in which he talks about the film.

He wrote: "Thank you so much. I know it’s a controversial film, I really tried to make something different, with a look and voice of its own.

"I took inspiration from the insanity of the original comics. Making a movie is a journey, not a straight line. I learned so much."

He added: "And I know Squad has its flaws, Hell, the World knows it. Nothing hurts more than to pick up a newspaper and see a couple years of your blood, sweat and tears ripped to shreds. The hate game is strong out there. (sic)”

'I'd make the Joker the main villain'

Ayer also admitted: "Wish I had a time machine. I’d make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story. I have to take the good and bad and learn from it."

The film only had a 26% rating on movie site, Rotten Tomatoes.

The New Yorker slammed the flick, saying: “To say that the movie loses the plot would not be strictly accurate, for that would imply that there was a plot to lose.”

"Suicide Squad is a so-so, off-peak superhero movie. It chases after the nihilistic swagger of Deadpool and the anarchic whimsy of Guardians of the Galaxy but trips over its own feet,” The New York Times said.

Channel24’s film critic Ilan Preskovsky rated the film only two stars and said "despite a very promising first act, Suicide Squad comes undone once its very weak main plot kicks in".
