Film: The Lego Ninjago Movie

Directors: Charlie Bean, Bob Logan, Paul Fisher

Voices: Jackie Chan, Dave Franco

A team of Lego ninjas who are high school loners by day and warriors by night use their skills and their suits (called “mechs”) to combat a supervillain named Garmadon.

The Lego Ninjago Movie takes you, and the ninjas, on an adventure to finally beat Garmadon and stop him from taking control of their city, which is called Ninjago.

Blending humour and action, we follow the Lego ninjas on their search for the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon, which will be used to defeat Garmadon. The quest is filled with plenty of jokes and references to pop culture, such as Star Wars, which make it very entertaining to watch.

Like its predecessors, it splices in live action, and the Ultimate Ultimate Weapon ends up being a cat sent to destroy Ninjago.

The main character, Lloyd (Dave Franco), who’s a ninja himself and part of the team, but also the son of Garmadon, is endearing and funny in his own unique way. The references to Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are blatant.

Other references that make the movie interesting to watch are to the Power Rangers with the various suits and the combination of their powers. This takes you on a wonderful trip down memory lane.

However, the unabating one-liners can get repetitive and could have done with some editing.

This movie is great for an outing as it’s entertaining, action-packed and funny for the whole family, although adults might get a bit bored when comparing it with the first two in the franchise. Watch it when you’re in the mood for something lighthearted and happy.
