Los Angeles - A prequel to The Omen is reportedly in the works.

Antonio Campos, the indie filmmaker, is locked in negotiations to helm the supernatural horror thriller, a decade after the release of the John Moore-directed remake of the 1976 original, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Campos' previous credits include Martha Marcy May Marlene and 2012's Simon Killer.

Meanwhile, David S. Goyer, the producer of The Dark Knight trilogy, is on board to produce the new movie.

However, there is no word yet on who will star in the prequel, while plot details are being kept under wraps too.

The original film is considered to be a horror classic, as it saw Gregory Peck star as an ambassador who comes to think that his five-year-old son could be the living embodiment of the Antichrist.

Omen led to two sequels and a series of novels, with the remake starring Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles.

The remake was released on 6 June, 2006, to signify the Biblical number 666 and performed creditably at the box office, although it failed to match the excitement levels of the original.

The Fox network is also currently airing a TV version of The Omen, titled Damien.
