The Rock set to play a superhero in new sci-fi flick

Los Angeles - Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is being lined up for the lead role in Doc Savage.

The 43-year-old actor has caught the eye of director Shane Black as he hopes to persuade him to jump on board the project, which has been in the pipeline since 2009, when he gets started on adapting the iconic pulp character.

Speaking to Thrillist, Black said: "Doc Savage is sort of in the ether now. We're hoping to make it sometime next year. I would very much like to do Doc with a fellow named Dwayne Johnson if we can make that work. I made a decision that Dwayne is the guy. It's on the back burner while he's busy."

The blockbuster will follow the story of Savage - who has been created with superhuman abilities - as he's raised from birth by geeky scientists to be the perfect hero.

However, Black may need to wait a little while longer if he wants Johnson to take on the role of Savage, as the hunk is currently busy shooting the new Baywatch blockbuster

Johnson will play a veteran lifeguard in the flick alongside David Hasslehoff, who portrayed buff lifeguard Mitch Buchannon in the long-running TV drama series, and Zac Efron when the movie hits cinemas early next year.
