What it's about:
There’s a right way to be single, a wrong way to be single, and then there’s Alice. And Robin, Lucy, Meg, Tom, and David. New York City is full of lonely hearts seeking the right match, be it a love connection, a hook-up, or something in the middle. And, somewhere between the teasing texts and one-night stands, what these unmarrieds all have in common is the need to learn how to be single in a world filled with ever-evolving definitions of love. Sleeping around in the city that never sleeps was never so much fun.
What we thought:
Most of the population has this preconception about how to be single, and if you’re one of those people you need to throw all your ideas of what it’s like out the door and go watch this movie!
Not only is the film a funny, light hearted chick flick, it actually provides some really good pointers for women and even men living the single life whether it be in the city that never sleeps or a random little town in the middle of nowhere.
When you first meet Alice (Dakota Johnson) she is pretty much every lost girl trying to find herself fresh out of varsity. As the film progresses, you see how she grows and moves through the different phases of her young life and by the end of the film you’ll sit there feeling like you’ve literally faced every obstacle she faces in four years in only 1 hour and 50 minutes.
While the film presents itself as this ‘girls gone wild, hook up with anything that moves, party’ vibe it really offers a whole lot more.
Rebel Wilson, who plays Alice’s new found bestie Robin, is the guru of partying and one night stands. Her portrayal of the character is typical Rebel Wilson and that’s okay because she is hilarious and pulls it off.
The rest of the starring cast, just like Alice, are facing their own ups and downs of learning to be single in a world that offers a vague definition of love. The casting was very fitting - while each character has their own back story, they are integrated really well.
Why it works so well: the audience are given a good array of choices to pick their favourite or who they relate to most, so in the end you’re not sitting there thinking ‘well I only had two or three personalities to choose from and I couldn’t relate to either of them.’
Why it might not work so well: you may find yourself feeling a little lost in the chaotic lives of each character which takes away from the main storyline. More than three can easily become too crowded and confusing.
The location of the film is spot on for the theme. No one can argue that experiencing the night life of NYC is something on everyone’s bucket list and had me feeling serious FOMO. What could be more satisfying than going out to the busy, colourful streets of New York and having the freedom to do whatever the hell you want!
You are bound to bond with someone and in my case it was Alice. Starting out as this oblivious, innocent girl corrupted by partying habits and then maturing into this young, confident woman convinced me it is totally okay to be alone and to be perfectly content that way.
