What it's about:
Charlie is a playboy who’s convinced that relationships are dead, even though his sister, a therapist, tries to tell him otherwise. His best friends bet him that if he sticks to one woman for one month, he’s bound to fall in love. Charlie takes the bet because he believes that he’s immune to love... until he crosses paths with the beautiful and mysterious Eva. Turning on his irresistible charm, Charlie coaxes Eva into a casual affair, but soon finds out that Eva has turned the tables on him. Now Charlie is questioning whether he may actually want more than just a one night stand.
What we thought:
I should have taken it as a sign when it turned out that I was the only reviewer at the press screening for The Perfect Match. It’s like everyone else got the memo that this movie was not worth the time except me.
I honestly think E! News anchor Terrence J called up all his famous friends and said he wanted to make a movie and they all jumped on the bandwagon. (sorry, not sorry)
The plot follows the standard played out recipe of the rom-com/buddy genre and the characters and storylines are nothing new.
You have the player (Terrence J), who doesn’t believe in love and is afraid of commitment, but then he meets a woman (Cassie Ventura) who makes him change his womanising ways.
Then there’s the married couple (Donald Faison, Dascha Polanco), who are trying to have a baby but encounter fertility issues.
To round up the group of friends are the long term couple (Robert Christopher Riley, Lauren London) who are about to get married but there are some money issues.
Each of their ‘issues’ get resolved neatly without any real introspection and character development and the one ‘shocking plot twist’ is quite predictable.
Just to ‘spice’ things up there are smaller plots involving Brandy Norwood who’s an eccentric actress and French Montana who’s trying to sign a lucrative contract and takes business advice from his pet monkey.
Oh, and just to annoy everyone there's Casper Smart (Jennifer Lopez's boo) who plays Terrence's workmate who zooms around on a hover board in the office.
As the lead Terrence is bland and has no charisma. His onscreen romance with Cassie lacks chemistry and the love scenes between them are a tad bit awkward to watch.
While Cassie is beautiful onscreen her acting abilities are lacking. Just like her character, there is no depth to her.
The movie feels like one long hip hop/R&B music video littered with beautiful people and an air of affluence, but no real story, which should come as no surprise as director Billie Woodruff is best known for directing music videos.
This film had a limited international cinema release and we unfortunately made the list.
This wannabe rom-com/dramedy is a straight to DVD fare or rather catch it on M-Net Romance sometime next year.
