What it’s about:
Michelangelo (Noel Fisher); Donatello (Jeremy Howard); Leonardo (Pete Ploszek) and Raphael (Alan Ritchson) have to stop their old foe Shredder (Brian Tee) who has escaped from prison.
What we thought of it:
While escaped from prison Shredder becomes even more powerful after teaming up with Krang, Beebop and Rocksteady. This added nod to the source material gave the second Ninja Turtle movie more of the feel of the old TV series that South African audiences (who are a bit older) might know and like.
But I didn’t want to watch this movie like a twenty-something, I wanted to see it from the eyes of a kid seeing their favourite super heroes kicking some bad guy butt. Because to be honest, I was a total nerd as a kid and loved things that grownups just didn’t seem to get at the time. Like talking turtles, mice on bikes from Mars and a super powerful man named Captain Planet.
I often found myself wishing that the reviewers of those TV series or movies would write about reasons my mom (who always read reviews) would let me watch things not reasons why she would say that it’s a waste of money. Because she had enough of those.
So, from that perspective the Ninja Turtles and their storyline in this film are pretty cool. Their humour, while not highbrow, still seem to land with the kids in the cinema, the action sequences suspended disbelief and the storyline, while not stellar, was at least fast paced and too tough to keep up with.
That’s the point really, that this movie works for its target demographic, not work on multiple levels for multiple demographics, like Finding Dory or Inside Out.
And is that so bad? Maybe I guess if you’re a parent who has to go with your child to the cinema and see this. However, if your child liked the first one, and is old enough to go on their own according to the age restriction then let them.
My guess, because it’s bigger and better than the first; introduces new exciting characters like Casey Jones and is at the very least fun they will like this one too.
