8 Women

2006-11-03 14:16

At an isolated mansion in the snowy countryside of 1950s France, a family is gathered for the holiday season. But there will be no celebration - their beloved patriarch has been murdered!

The killer can only be one of the eight women closest to the man of the house. Was it his powerful wife? His spinster sister-in-law? His miserly mother-in-law? Maybe the insolent chambermaid or the loyal housekeeper? Could it possibly have been one of his two young daughters?

A surprise visit from the victim's chic sister sends the household into a tizzy, encouraging hysterics, exacerbating rivalries, and encompassing musical interludes. Comedic situations arise with the revelations of dark family secrets. Seduction dances with betrayal. The mystery of the female psyche is revealed. There are eight women - and each is a suspect. Each has a motive. Each has a secret. Beautiful, tempestuous, intelligent, sensual, and dangerous. One of them is guilty. Which one is it?

What the critics are saying:

"Subtle it certainly isn't, but there's an underlying tenderness towards these fatal femmes and an upbeat humour that buoys 8 Women and puts some oomph behind all the fluff."
- Laura Bushell, BBCi

"...a tonic of sorts, but you should be warned that at no time does it taste anything other than most peculiar. Put simply, it is a cocktail: a hot-hued, postmodern, nineteen-fifties murder-mystery musical hen party."
- Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

"...all eight women are something to see and marvel at. Whatever you call this one-of-a-kind bonbon spiked with wit and malice, it's classic oo-la-la."
- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

8 Women is a delightful, if baffling, combination of sober murder mystery and raucous musical. Boasting eight of France's finest femmes, no foreign film fan should dare miss it.

Just another typical Tom Cruise action film, with nothing to get too excited about. The film is loaded with action-film stereotypes and cheesy one-liners. Read More »

Hands of Stone

Hands of Stone is a bland, unlikable portrayal of a real-life boxer that struggles to hit the highs of Rocky IV let alone Raging Bull or the original Rocky. Mark this one down as “for boxing fanatics only”. Read More »
