About Time

about time
What it's about:

The night after another unsatisfactory New Year party, Tim’s father tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time.

Tim can’t change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life, so he decides to make his world a better place—by getting a girlfriend. Sadly, that turns out not to be as easy as he thought.

What we thought:

Although the plot might sound absolutely ridiculous, About Time is actually a very refreshing romantic comedy (like Enough Said) where time travel almost seems normal.

When you consider that the screenplay came from the same hand that wrote Love Actually, director and writer Richard Curtis, it is no wonder that the plot actually worked. The time-travelling hero has no interest to get fame and money from his gift, but instead focuses it all on love, friends and helping his family.

If you think about it, that is probably what most people would do with the same gift anyway, making the story line that more plausible.

Domnhall Gleeson helms the movie and although not readily recognised (most know him as Bill Weasley from Harry Potter) he is definitely carving out a name for himself in Brit comedy, much like his on-screen father and comedic legend Bill Nighy. Even their similar humour makes you believe that they really are related.

Gleeson’s wit is equally matched by Rachel McAdams, who seems to have gotten stuck being cast as a time traveller’s wife (a strange typecast to be in). However, this does not mean McAdams plays the same character at all.

Whereas The Time Traveller’s Wife is a drama and focuses on the struggle of a wife married to a man who has no control over his travelling, McAdams' character in About Time is more quirky and fun, and the time travelling is viewed more as a gift than a curse, although it isn’t the answer for everything as the main character finds out.

It’s not all jokes and witty remarks, as there are some very poignant emotional plot twists that drive home the real message behind the movie – that time is about how you spend it, not about how much you have of it.

Compared to other romantic comedies, even without the time-travel, this movie has so much charm and originality that it would make it appealing for most people to watch – not just the female audience the rom coms aim for. Of course, British rom coms have always had quite an edge over their American counterparts.

Never a dull moment, About Time leaves you with a smile on your face and a lot more optimism for your life, despite the serious lack of time travelling.

It’s about time that a British romantic sci-fi comedy came along to make the world a better place.

Just another typical Tom Cruise action film, with nothing to get too excited about. The film is loaded with action-film stereotypes and cheesy one-liners. Read More »

Hands of Stone

Hands of Stone is a bland, unlikable portrayal of a real-life boxer that struggles to hit the highs of Rocky IV let alone Raging Bull or the original Rocky. Mark this one down as “for boxing fanatics only”. Read More »
