And When Last Did You See Your Father?

What it's about:

Blake Morrison (Colin Firth) deals with his father Arthur's (Jim Broadbent) terminal illness and imminent death. Blake's memories of everything funny, embarrassing and upsetting about his childhood and teens are interspersed with the present.

As he struggles to come to terms with his father, and their history of conflict, he learns to accept that one's parents are not always accountable to their children.

What the critics said:

"The movie is slick and treacly and goes nowhere that hasn't been gone before."
Stephen Hunter - [Washington Post]

"When Did You Last See Your Father? taps into the conflicting feelings so many of us can have about parents who haunt us because they're difficult, which is part of what makes them irreplaceable."
Owen Gleiberman - [Entertainment Weekly]

"When Did You Last See Your Father? is grown-up, civilized fare, even though the whole thing might have been improved with a bit of messiness."
Manohla Dargis - [New York Times]

"When Did You Last See Your Father? is an eloquent and affecting evocation of a man who remains bigger than life even as he approaches death."
Joe Morgenstern - [Wall Street Journal]

"A low-key Big Fish minus the whimsical fantasy."
Nick Schager - [Slant Magazine]

"The movie is slick and treacly and goes nowhere that hasn't been gone before."
Stephen Hunter - [Washington Post]

"The film is not only poignant, but nuanced, never offering pat answers, predictable revelations or easy sentimentality."
Claudia Puig - [USA Today]
