Conan the Barbarian
What it's about:

A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realises that he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.

What the critics thought:

"It's just another ham-handed adventure flick in eye-deadening, wallet-draining 3-D."  - Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News

"There are swords and sorcery, pirates and monsters, taxed bodices and taxing mythology. In other words, there's the bare minimum necessary to summon this dismal movie into existence." - Scott Tobias, NPR

"It's kind of a wicked blast to watch, especially if you're in the mood for some righteous revenge."  - Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

"Here's a movie that's simultaneously lavishly violent and numbing, visually ornate and undistinguished, epic and shallow, relentlessly noisy and tone-deaf, workmanlike and unfilling." - Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

Conan the Barbarian is an action adventure movie that will suit action fans who are not looking for a deep story. As a fan of the Conan character (having seen the previous movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger, read a few of the comic books, watched the animated series, etc.) I enjoyed the movie for what it is. It's a simple tale of revenge that we have seen many times before, but infused with gory violence and some fantasy elements. Newcomer Jason Momoa, whilst not as charming as Arnold Schwarzenegger, is a decent Conan, who is suitably intense and has the requisite physique. He is also a much better actor that Arnold. The rest of the cast is functional at best, which at least makes the movie watchable. The actions scenes are well choreographed and incredibly violent much like the movie Gladiator and is not for the squeamish. Bar a few inconsistencies in the story and the weak 3D, I found the movie entertaining, but it's just missing that little something that made the original Conan the Barbarian special.
