Daybreakers

What it's about:

The year is 2019. A mysterious plague has swept over the earth, transforming the majority of the world’s population into vampires. Humans are now an endangered, second-class species forced into hiding as they are hunted and farmed, for vampire consumption, to the brink of extinction. It’s all up to Edward Dalton, a vampire researcher who refuses to feed on human blood, to perfect a blood substitute that might sustain vampires and spare the few remaining humans.

Time and hope are running out – until Ed meets Audrey, a human survivor who leads him to a startling medical breakthrough. Armed with knowledge for which both humans and vampires will kill, Ed must battle his own kind in a deadly struggle that will decide the fate of the human race.

What the critics thought:

"Hawke gives his all here - or maybe just half his all - and it isn't quite enough: He's trying to be soulful, but he really just looks a little tired. The real delight is Willem Dafoe."
- Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

"For the lowbrow, the thrill is a level of fleshy explosiveness reminiscent of David Cronenberg's Scanners. No one dies quietly; he must either detonate like Hiroshima or burst into juicy red chunks of viscera."
- Kyle Smith, New York Post

"Even though I'm pretty much vampired out these days, I appreciated the grossout thrills and the B-movie dialogue."
- Richard Roeper, Richard Roeper.com

"It’s a shame Australia’s Spierig Brothers opt to turn it into just any old noir-future chase movie - roughly Blade meets Minority Report, without the production flair."
- Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph

In 2019, the most precious natural resource is we.
