Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

2006-03-30 12:29

Joel (Jim Carrey) is stunned to discover that his girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had her memories of their tumultuous relationship erased. Out of desperation, he contacts the inventor of the process, Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson), to have Clementine removed from his own memory.

But as Joel's memories progressively disappear, he begins to rediscover his love for Clementine. From deep within the recesses of his brain, Joel attempts to escape the procedure. As Dr. Mierzwiak and his crew (Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood) chase him through the maze of his memories, it's clear that Joel just can't get Clementine out of his head.

What the critics are saying:

"...while screenwriting clever-dickery can be emotionally alienating, here the ideas are infused with soul. The characters are tangy, tangible creations - funny, sad, sometimes unpleasant. They feel real."
- Nev Pierce, BBCi Films

"A remarkable film that can coax a smile about making the same mistakes in love and then sneak up and quietly break your heart."
- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"The disappointment I felt at the end of Eternal Sunshine was almost crushing, simply because there were sections of it that were as daring in their emotional directness as anything I've seen in years."
- Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

This sci-fi romantic comedy about a man who erases the memory of his ex-girlfriend from his mind is as heart warming as it is surprising.

Brilliant I saw this movie while I was on holiday in the US of A. I loved it. But the person who deserves the most praise is screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich and Adaptation). He has created an incredibly original screenplay that is easier to admire than to love. Fine, touchingly witty peformance by Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst and (believe it or not) Jim Carrey show these actors depth and range. The end is heartbreaking...and funny in a bittersweet way. This film is truly a rare gem, bursting with intelligent humor and originality. Much more sophisticated that the films Carrey usually does. Absolutely!

10/10 Yes, this movie is truelly a rare find.Bravo to Charlie Kaufman. But indeed also to the cast.Jim Carrey delivers a performance not seen since The Truman Show and not being a fan of Kate Winslet, feel that she has earned a lot of credibility with this performance. And a clever touch with her changing hair! I would very strongly recommend!!!

Eternal Sunshine I saw it at Brooklyn when it came out and to tell the truth I struggled getting back to reality afterward. It really touched my as a concept as well as the roads love allows us to take. What I intensely enjoyed, was Jim Carrey's acting. Since The Truman Show, I have waited for a serious movie from Mr. Carrey, and Eternal Sunshine did not disappoint. In my opinion, he is one of the most underrated actors in the business, purely because he tends to take on comedic roles without any substance. Good on him for moving forward and showing his real talent. Amelie
