What it's about:
Fighting back after four years as a yakuza sex-slave, a woman matches wits and weaponry with a legion of killers who are out to collect the bounty on the heads of her and her family.
What we thought:
So you’re stuck in a room forced to be a sex slave, what do you do? Well, if you’re Salma Hayek you adjust your nightie, take your gun out of the toilet cistern and take on the bad guys.
From the opening sequences of the movie you just know shit is about to go down.
It starts out quite random to be honest, but as the movie progresses you’re able to piece together how she got into this room.
Everly (Salma Hayek) has been held captive in a fancy flat for five years by a crime boss: the type who owns the whole city, even the police.
She somehow manages to find a saviour in a detective who offers her an escape through witness protection. But the big bad guy finds out about her plan and sends his head to her as a present. The crime boss puts out a hit on her offering a big reward to anyone who can take her out; it’s going to be one very long night.Assassins come at her, other prostitutes in the building, a weirdo masochist and even the crime boss himself.
To add to the thrill Everly’s mom and daughter also end up in the apartment block of horrors.
It is filled with blood, brutality, guns blazing, knives wielding, and hand grenade throwing and Everly handles everything that comes at her, even in high heels!
This movie is essentially a one woman show. Salma Hayek does not disappoint, she is an engaging and entertaining leading lady.
I have to admit though, one of the first things running though my mind was, ‘where did she get all this weaponry and fight training if she was stuck in this room for five years?’
But hey, this is the movies, anything is possible. What drives Everly is her desire to survive, to get out of the hellhole she finds herself in and to protect her family. She is no superhero and it is pure adrenaline that pushes her in the beginning, and a bit of luck. She gets smarter and more strategic as the film progresses.
There’s a bit of a storyline but this movie is not about the storyline, it is about the action.
If you’re looking for a thrill, with a hot leading lady that can kick ass this movie won’t disappoint, it’s a fun watch!
Just another typical Tom Cruise action film, with nothing to get too excited about. The film is loaded with action-film stereotypes and cheesy one-liners. Read More »

Hands of Stone is a bland, unlikable portrayal of a real-life boxer that struggles to hit the highs of Rocky IV let alone Raging Bull or the original Rocky. Mark this one down as “for boxing fanatics only”. Read More »
