G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

What it's about:

From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity" or G.I. JOE team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight villains such as the corrupt Scottish arms dealer Destro who is threatening world stability with his dangerous games. The team must also deal with the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organisation and  prevent them from plunging the world into total chaos.

What we thought:

If you loved Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen then you’ll devour G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra with child-like glee. This is one over-the-top action movie filled with thrilling visual effects to keep you on the edge of your seat, and pulverising fight scenes that are fun and fierce. With a diverse and attractive cast, Stephen Sommers, who gave us Van Helsing and The Mummy movies, doesn’t disappoint.

When a military team's mission, led by Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), to transport warheads is sabotaged, the G.I. Joe team saves them. Impressed by the team’s skills, tactics and high-performance weaponry technology, Duke and Ripcord decide to train up and become part of this special force team and save the world from a diabolical disaster.

Knowing Channing from his Step Up fame, it’s refreshing to see him play a character with a bit more substance. Just shows that there is so much more to him than just a hunky body with chiselled good looks and slick dance moves. The "bromantic" partner at his side is lanky comedian Marlon Wayans; an unexpected choice, but their partnership works well.

Guys are in for an extra special treat as British siren Sienna Miller dons a skintight PVC body suit and long black locks to portray The Baroness, Duke’s former lover turned villain. If you weren’t into the S&M look before, you will be after checking her out here. Miller, who fired her own guns and did her own stunts, proves that there is more to her than her public love life with the married Balthazar Getty.

Though the storyline is uncomplicated and easy to follow, the only highlights and thrills of the movie are the action scenes. The movie’s ability to give the audience insight into each character as they reminisce into the past is slickly done and doesn’t detract from the action – of which there is plenty. It can get a bit cartoonish at times, though. Think: guys wearing hi-tech suits, dodging explosive flying cars through the streets of Paris, while still perfecting their gunshots – it’s very Wanted.

A real must-see, just for the thrill and hot eye-candy.
