Gamer

What it's about:

Gamer is a high-concept action thriller set in a near-future when gaming and entertainment have evolved into a terrifying new hybrid. Humans control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online games: people play people. For keeps. Mind-control technology is widespread, and at the heart of the controversial game is its creator, reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall). His latest brainchild, the first-person shooter game Slayers, allows millions to act out their most savage fantasies, online, in front of a global audience, using real prisoners as avatars with whom they fight to the death.

What we thought:

What not everyone realises about gamers is that the gaming culture has a lot to offer those of us who have better things to do than press buttons all night. Gaming culture inspires the 2000s in the same way graphic novels drove trends in the 80s, allowing impossible fantasies (whether nightmarish or pleasurable) to be realised when art interprets them and makes them entertaining to people with actual lives.

Gerard Butler plays Kable, a man who like many others convicted of crimes is forced to pay by being enslaved as a gladiator controlled by gamers. Just like in the real multiplayer games world, there are patches, cheats, top players and spoilt kids who’re obsessed with it. Of course, it’s not just the players who are enslaved, but others within the society as well. So, not only are you treated to the pleasures of graphic violence and impossible stunts performed by sweating muscle-men with 5 o'clock shadows sharp enough to remove a layer of skin, but also the gyrating transformations of beautiful women who’ll fulfill any desire and do your bidding. And just because you know it’s all bad and the hero’s here to make it all stop, doesn’t mean you won’t lean forward in your seat.

I’d say the film "explores issues of identity, free will, gender roles and the destructive capacity of humankind in a society on the brink of apocalypse" but academic life never was for me… and it would also be a lie.

Actually, watching Butler play the brutal hero, the robotically gorgeous Amber Valletta as a MILF, and Dexter star Michael C. Hall playing a sociopathic control freak (again) isn’t about the art, but rather about these iconic characters playing out their usual roles. It’s about the sensation, and it’s all just an excuse for libertarian, orgiastic enjoyment of our worst human urges.

Of course, kids are going to be dying to get their hands on Gamer for the same reasons their parents will try to prevent them. Age-inappropriate exploding heads, bare breasts, doggy-style sex, swearing and smoking all contribute to the cartoonish, crazy, addicted moral atmosphere of the movie. But because any gamer kids worth their salt will know where to get this anyhow (and no, I don’t mean at the video store – that would mean leaving the house, idiot)  you may as well just give up and ask to borrow it once they’re done.

A future fantasy for gamers – a high-tech, violent answer to the far superior classic Strange Days (1995) – Gamer is a visual blast that entertains from its dark and promising start to its sentimental finale.

This flick was absolutely terrible. Your review sucks. Perhaps kids who love these dumb games and cannot concentrate for more than a second at a time will like it. But it's a daft and unpleasant film which anyone with a brain bigger than a pea will reject. Don't waste your money. Make your teenagers wait until it comes on DVD before you let them watch it. And then evacuate the house while they are suffering through it. It's just plain awful. Butler barely registers, and Michael C Hall is dreadful - I hope at least this talented thesp got well paid. Like the "Crank" movies, it feels like it was edited with a chainsaw. Avoid like the plague. This one is for moron's only.

My daughter (19) went to see it and said it was more like mainstream porn dressed up as a real movie...too much gratuitous nudity.

@grant aubin: gee, not liking the movie doesn't make people who do like it morons! I liked it, but then again I am a gamer and no I am not a moron.A university degree and an invite to a school for the gifted are proof of that. I think maybe you were not the intended audience? @kim: this is nowhere near mainstream porn. More like late-night e-tv meats gratuitous violence.

It's pure satire people (looks like most of you missed that) that showcases where our downward spiral soceity is at the momment. Desensitised and inpersonal. Funny and actually quite genius.
