Hond se Dinges

What it's about:

Dolf (Ivan Botha) discovers the remains of his murdered father with the help of his mischievous Jack Russell, Pernans. He is kidnapped when a security guard (Frank Opperman) and his girlfriend become convinced that he has also found a famous lost diamond. It is up to his son, rocker Dolfie De Lange, to rescue him before things get out of hand.

What we thought of it:

People like to complain about Leon Schuster’s films. To a great extent, what they’re really complaining about is the genre that he operates in: no-holds-barred, low brow, "laugh riot" comedy. The fact is, Schuster does this quite well, and is at least partly responsible for the modest health of the local film industry.

Hond se Dinges takes that same formula and…. well, stuffs it up pretty badly.

Throughout the movie, you get the feeling that the entire local cast is stage acting. Sometimes they pull it off – Frank "The Veteran" Opperman gives a suitably madcap performance as Rommel, a scummy security guard – but mostly there is an embarrassing amount of exaggerated gestures and expressions that remind you (all the time) you are watching a low-budget comedy.

There are car chases, stolen diamonds and even tiny flashes of nudity in Hond Se Dinges – all proven ingredients for cinematic entertainment – but somehow, the action just doesn’t grab the imagination. The drama credentials fall flat thanks to lazy, predictable plot devices and the comedy is continually sabotaged by corny gags and play-fighting. As for love, Dolf de Lange (Ivan Botha) and his journalist pal Lara (Tinarie van Wyk Loots) draw inexplicably closer towards the end of the movie, despite having less chemistry than Julius Malema’s matric certificate.

Let’s not be elitist about this. Comedy doesn’t have to be mature. What it does need is pacing, a good rapport with its audience and off-the-wall gags and laughs (not a highlights reel of Leon Schuster’s career). Unfortunately, this team could and should have done better.

This local "laugh riot" will remind you of great South African comedies like Lipstiek Dipstiek… and make you wish you’d rented that instead.

Sies! This is the the perfect example of the level, or rather, total and utter lack of sophistication in the South African art scene. Why do these films garner such support from the distributors. They make an educated person blush with embarrasement. Surely South Africans are better than this candy floss nonsense? Surely?

I cant believe people like movies like this and bakgat, being afrikaans myself the movies are so predictable and stupid. Filled with toilet jokes and sex humour. The plot of these movies are so unoriginal and the acting is useless. Afrikaans movies have lost the plot completely .

Moenie dit kyk as jy nie daarvan hou nie - dit maak jou net so "kommin" soos jou ma .

The slapstick genre has a lot of merit and we have had movies that were done really well in the past, eg Sweet 'n Short, Bakgat, Lipstick Dipstick, but usually you get something that could have just as easily have been produced by the Wayans brothers.
